Brief Discussion of Why People Drink and Drive

Submitted by: Tony Lu

In wondering why people drink and drive, there are a number of significant reasons. Through a combination of factors, individuals may decide to do this, and it is never a good idea. These situations often end badly, and major injuries and fatalities can result. By examining why such things occur, people that are taking part in these dangerous actions might be capable of being helped.

Most men and women do it because they believe they are not a danger to themselves or others. In short, they do not believe they are impaired. This usually comes about because the individual has taken part in drinking and driving before, and thus believes that nothing bad will happen. They have a sense that they are invincible.

They also might be encouraged to do such things because of peer pressure. If they have been drinking with friends, and those friends are not particularly responsible, then they might be pressed to get behind the wheel of a vehicle. This is especially plausible if the friends in question need a ride home and have no other place to turn.

Family members might also inadvertently encourage this kind of behavior. If a person sees a parent or a brother or sister attempt to drive the car while he/she is impaired, then this will be taken to heart and it will be seen as a viable action. Close family members can have strong influences on people, especially younger children who are easily manipulated.

If a person has been drinking particularly heavily, they may simply not care if his/her actions are safe or not. He/she might realize somewhere in the back of the mind that he/she is committing a seriously dangerous act, but that thought will be pushed away and the vehicle will be driven anyway. This kind of behavior is hard to put a stop to, and the person might need an intervention in these kinds of cases.

Still other people might be unaware of the legal limits associated with taking in alcohol. They may think simply that they are below that legal limit, and will think that they are not doing anything out of the ordinary. Some education in the matter can probably help get a person to stop behaving so brashly. Information goes a long way towards solving problems.

Probably one of the most obvious reasons that people drive while drunk is that they have attended a special occasion, like a birthday party or a graduation. At these events, alcohol flows quite freely sometimes, and they will unknowingly drink too much. They then find themselves having to travel home somehow, and incorrectly think that they will probably be all right.

In answering why people drink and drive, there are a multitude of factors. From peer pressure and depression to special events, men and women put themselves in bad situations that can lead to serious problems. With some foresight, they should recognize the error of their ways and try to reform their bad habits so that they do not hurt others on the road.
