Josh Williams Sees Winchester Speedway As Perfect Picture For David Vs. Goliath

WINCHESTER, Indiana – While the luxury of marketing partners equals the essentials of a fast race car on the track, veteran ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards driver Josh Williams hopes the old lingo David vs. Goliath pays off in Sunday’s Herr’s Chase The Taste 200 at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway.

For obvious reasons, the stronger more funded teams in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards are often the favorites anytime the cars hit the track, but Williams is hoping that his small, mostly volunteer Josh Williams Motorsports (JWM) team can pull off the upset in the 11th race of the season.

On the heels of a solid seventh place finish in his Cunningham Motorsports debut last Saturday afternoon at Chicagoland Speedway, Williams returns to his normal territory behind the wheel of the No. 6 Southwest Florida Cable Construction Chevrolet.

“I’m extremely appreciative of the opportunity last weekend at Chicagoland Speedway with Cunningham Motorsports,” said Williams. “We didn’t have the strongest car in the field, but we made the best of the situation and walked away with another top-10 finish. I learned a lot about their program and I am hopeful for (maybe) another opportunity down the road.”

While short tracks have relatively been the niche for the Port Charlotte, Florida native and his team, Williams wants to finally live up to the hype of when he will finally breakthrough and win an ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards race.

“It’s going to happen, hopefully Sunday,” added Williams, who sits second in the championship standings. “It needs to happen for a lot of reasons. We don’t have much more funding to continue, so we need to get the win and hopefully it will help a lot of things we have working finally unravel. The guys have worked hard on our No. 6 Southwest Florida Cable Construction Chevrolet with this race circled on our calendar. Hopefully, that hard work lands us (finally) in Victory Lane.”

In three starts at the historical and insanely fast half-mile, Williams has maneuvered just one top-10 finish in his track debut in 2012, but after a strong start to the season, the Floridian knows bigger and better things are on the horizon for Sunday.

“It may not seem like it, but Winchester is absolutely one of my favs,” he added. “It’s a tough track and often been a place where it’s gotten the best of us, but this year I have a good feeling about it and I’m looking forward to getting things going on Saturday.

“We may not play our full cards on Saturday during practice, but you better believe when the green flag drops for the race, we’re not holding back. We don’t necessarily know what the future holds, so we need to race like there’s no tomorrow.”

Of course, while his future remains clouded, Williams currently occupies second in the championship standings, just 85 points from the lead. And while it’s unlikely that Williams will leave Winchester with the points lead, the 21-year old could easily slice into his deficit.

“With Winchester being a high-demand short track with a lot of unknowns, there’s always the opportunity to gain some ground. But, while you immediately think there’s a chance to gain, it could go the other way just as fast. Grant (Enfinger, point’s leader) has really had some fast cars this year, but we just need to keep doing what we’re doing and we’ll see how the race plays out.”

Like he’s done for the entire ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards season, Williams will continue the Team Anya Cale (#BeatLeukemia) campaign. Williams and JWM hosted 5-year old Anya Cale Harvey in the season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Last November, she was diagnosed with Leukemia and has undergone treatment since. Their friendship has quickly blossomed with Williams determined to bring awareness to her story and other children battling Leukemia.

“I think about Anya every day,” he added. “I can’t always be with her, but she is always in my thoughts and prayers and I look forward to seeing and giving her a big hug soon.”

Musselman’s Apple Sauce will continue their support of JWM and serve as an associate partner in his 72nd career ARCA race.
