On Independence Day, we mark the birth of our great nation with picnics, cookouts, fireworks, and fun with family and friends. Sometimes, these celebrations include alcohol. And sometimes, that alcohol can make its way onto the road.

During the 2013 Fourth of July Holiday, 512 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcyclist who was drunk. Roughly one-in-five of drivers involved in those crashes had blood alcohol contents of .15 or higher—almost twice the legal limit.

Help us remind drivers to plan ahead before they celebrate this Independence Day. Join us July 1 for a Buzzed Driving Twitter Chat at 3 pm ET to spread the word that #BuzzedDriving is #DrunkDriving. Follow along using #BuzzedDriving, ask questions of our experts, and spread this safety message with the help of videos, banners, and other tools NHTSA is offering to help save lives this Fourth of July weekend.
