SANTA FE – Bicycle enthusiasts are encouraged to challenge themselves in May, then share their experiences on social media using #BikesUnite.

The virtual sharing will replace the in person biking events usually scheduled in May to observe National Bicycle Awareness Month.

Whether you ride for fun, fitness or to make essential trips, bicyclists are part of a movement for safer streets, connected communities, a healthier planet and mental and physical wellness.

Safety Reminders for Bicyclists:

  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Ride with traffic not against it.
  • Obey all traffic signs and signals.
  • Ride as far to the right as possible.
  • Signal your intent to change lanes or turn.
  • Make yourself visible. Use a flashing orange or red light and wear reflective and light colored clothing.
  • Be aware of parked cars; watch for open doors.

  • Safety Reminders for Drivers:

  • Look for bicyclists before turning, merging into bicycle lanes and opening doors next to traffic.
  • Don’t make sudden right turns after passing a bicyclist on your right.
  • Stay watchful for sudden movements and lane changes by riders.
  • Keep your distance from bicyclists.
  • Stay alert, avoid distractions.
