FBI Media Alert: Shiprock Man Charged with Assault on Federal Officer

Derrick Begay, 32, of Shiprock, New Mexico, on the Navajo Nation, has been charged federally with assaulting, resisting, or impeding a federal officer.

Begay is accused of using his hand to strike a Bureau of Indian Affairs officer in the face near Shiprock High School on January 22, 2020, and fleeing in a vehicle at a high rate of speed.

FBI special agents arrested Begay in Shiprock on May 4, and he had an initial appearance via web conference in U.S. District Court in Albuquerque on May 5, 2020.

Begay’s arraignment/detention hearing is set for May 7, 2020.

The public is reminded that all suspects are presumed innocent unless convicted in a court of law.
