SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation will use animation for the first time in a new ENDWI campaign at the end of June that also promotes the states COVID-19 safe practices.

The television and social media spots by RK Venture of Albuqueruque show animated characters practicing social distancing and wearing masks unless exercising or eating while also sending a strong message against drunk driving.

“Responsible behavior when it comes to drinking is essential no matter the state of the pandemic,” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. “New Mexicans should make the best and safest decisions for themselves, their neighbors and their communities.”

“Alcohol sales actually increased when people started staying home due to the pandemic. When New Mexico started to open back up, people were anxious to get out and socialize. This could lead to an increase in drunk driving,” Transportation Secretary Mike Sandoval said. “We want to remind people, as they get back together, they must do so responsibly. Designated drivers and safe rides home are just as important as using COVID safe practices.”

The ENDWI campaign was created in 2012 to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes and fatalities by promoting designated drivers, safe rides and responsible alcohol consumption with the goal of ending drunk driving in New Mexico.

While DWI statistics have declined drastically in the last 30 years, drunk driving remains a problem in New Mexico. In 2019, there were 173 alcohol related fatalities in our state. That’s 21 more than the previous year.
