NMDOT receives $59 million from the Federal Aid Highway Program

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) received $59,252.140.00 from the Federal Highway Administration and the department plans to spend every cent.

Every year there is an excess of federal highway funds. States can then apply for the money to be added to the funds already received in the current fiscal year. In 2020, states were awarded more than $4 billion in total redistribution funds.

“We are excited to put these funds to good use throughout the state,” Transportation Secretary Mike Sandoval said. “We have a handful of projects we are either adding to or taking off the shelf and starting as soon as possible. That means we not only keep our employees working, we get to add to the workforce as well.”

The projects that will benefit from the $59 million are listed below.

Southwest N.M.

· A 10 mile, eastbound stretch of I-10 will be repaved between Lordsburg and Deming

Southeast N.M.

· Money will be added to the current Hondo Valley pavement preservation project

Central N.M.

· Money will be put toward the Sunport Boulevard Extension project in Albuquerque
· A 2 mile stretch of I-25 near Belen will be rebuilt by recycling the existing roadway

Northern N.M.

· Money will be added to the N.M. 68 reconstruction project just north of Espanola
· A pavement preservation project will take place on a 2.5 mile stretch of N.M. 68 near Alcalde

Western N.M.

· A 65 mile stretch of I-40 west of Albuquerque will receive new guardrail
