Once in a while comes along a car that provides the feat of a sports car, the rich feel of a luxury car, and a rating of the gas mileage that’s unusually good for a car of its quality. An example of such a car is the Mercedes Benz E320. It’s really economic when it comes to fues and this is because the E320’s engine is diesel fueled.

Because of the reputation that diesel engine has with making too much noise and exhausting harmful gas, luxury cars and diesel engines may not seem an ideal fit. This issue has been resolved however, thanks to DaimlerChrysler’s development of the Bluetec diesel engine technology. The diesel engines that their luxury cars use function the way gasoline does when it comes to noise and emission.

Due to its high power output, diesel engines are already popular in Europe. Furthermore, technological advances now allow car makers to lower down the amount of dangerous gasses that the engine emits. With such popularity of these engines in the European region, American car aficionados are also showing interest.

Diesel engines earned a bad reputation in the past because of its nitrogen oxide and particulate emission but with the oxidation catalytic converter and a particular filter, these emissions are now being reduced. In addition to those two devices, NO2 trap and an SCR catalytic converter were also integrated by the Bluetec system. Because of the integration of the converters and filters, the engine must only use super low sulfur diesel fuel. The engine that comes with the E320 certainly is very efficient and clean that it’s very much the same as that of a gasoline engine. Not only that, when it comes to noise, or the lack of it, the E320 diesel engine is indeed at par with gasoline engines.

Because it is constructed out of aluminum alloys, the 3.0-liter V6 engine that comes with the E320 is considerably less heavy. The powerplant can produce an astounding 208 hp but what really stands out is its torque: a maximum revolution of 2400 per can be achieved. A seven-speed automatic transmission is coupled with the engine. This helps the smooth transfer of the horsepower and torque to the rear wheels. Pressing down the accelerator produces a great amount of power that it would take a high performance brake component like the ones found in Active Brake Direct to stop the E320 in its track. The speed that the E320 can achieve makes this an ideal car for speeding down open freeways where it’s real engine capability and the huge array of elements will really shine.
