At least 25 people are feared dead after bus they were riding in veered off a mountain road in Indian Kashmir and plunged into a river.

Local officials say the bus fell into the Chenab River near Ponga Marh east of Jammu. They said at least two passengers survived and managed to swim to safety.

Police had no details about how many people were in the bus but survivors said 30 to 35 people were traveling in the vehicle.

Rescuers reached the site of the accident after dark and will launch a search early Saturday.

India has frequent road accidents due to reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance and overcrowding.
