Greek Truckers Call Off Strike

VOA News

Greek truck drivers have called off a week-long strike that caused gas stations around the country to run out of fuel during peak tourist season.

The truckers’ union says drivers will be back behind the wheel Monday. But it warns that the drivers will go out on strike again if the government fails to honor its end of the bargain.

The union agreed to call off the strike Sunday after the government promised to end its mobilization of private trucks and army vehicles to deliver gasoline.

Athens also offered to start new talks with the drivers, who walked off the job over the government’s plan to open the industry to new competition and cut high fees for trucking licenses.

Truckers call the plan unfair. The government says reforms are needed to help the troubled Greek economy.
