22 Killed in Peru Bus Crash

VOA News

Emergency officials in a remote area of northern Peru say at least 22 people were killed and another 25 injured when a bus overturned and rolled into a deep ravine.

The accident occurred early Tuesday in the Andean district of Sayapullo, about 600 kilometers north of the capital, Lima. The bus, operated by the Kurrungo company, was carrying more than 50 people to the coastal city of Trujillo when it plunged into a 200-meter abyss.

Fatal accidents are common on Peru’s narrow, mountainous roads. Many buses are poorly maintained and drivers routinely overcrowd their vehicles with passengers.

Some information in this story was provided by AFP and Reuters.
