Son of Senior Chinese Police Officer in Fatal Hit-And-Run

VOA Breaking News (Voice of America)

Chinese media say police have arrested the son of a high-ranking police officer on charges that he killed one young woman and injured another in a drunk-driving incident.

News reports identify the driver as Li Qiming and say he drove away after hitting the young women at Hebei University on October 16. When he was stopped by campus security guards, he boasted that his father is Li Gang, deputy director of the local public security bureau.

The incident aroused widespread anger on the Internet because of Li’s arrogance. One report in the China Economic Times quoted Li complaining to the security guards that his car had been scraped.

A lawyer representing the family of the dead girl said Li could face the death penalty.
