Motor bike deaths are a big issue in the UK, as a motorcyclist is fifty times more likely to be killed in a road accident than a driver. In 2009 there were four hundred and seventy two deaths on the roads involving motor cyclists, and half of these accidents occurred at junctions in a collision with a car. There is a lot you can do to boost safety, whether you are a driver or a motorcyclist, and by implementing some safety tips you could save lives.

If you ride a motorbike then think about the clothes you are wearing to protect yourself. The roads are becoming more congested as the population rises, and therefore there is more chance of you getting in an accident. Opt for a helmet that has a good SHARP rating as these are the safest, and could save your life in an accident. As well as a good helmet, you need to make sure that you are wearing good protective gear, as this could save you from a horrible injury. Normal clothes like jeans will give you no protection should you fall, so make sure you have a jacket, boots, gloves and trousers, and wear bright and reflective gear to make it easy for other drivers to see you in the twilight.

Although you shouldn't have to, riding defensively could save your life. Assume all drivers haven't seen you and be observant to other people, and you could find that you pre-empt a situation.

If you are a car driver, then you can also save lives by keeping your distance if there is a bike in front of you. If the driver is inexperienced, driving too close can spook them and cause them to make a mistake which could cause an accident. Make sure you look at junctions, and make sure you take a last check before pulling out. Be aware that bikers could pass you on either side so look to your left too.

When you are getting out of your car after parking, check for bikers as you could open your door onto one and this is a large cause of accidents involving motorcyclists.

If you are driving in the UK, on a bike or in the car, then go online for Motor Insurance.
