RALIEGH — (UP) — North Carolina drivers were told today that motor vehicle registration fees and gasoline taxes paid to the state each year are now more than the total of all state taxes paid in 1940.

RALIEGH — (UP) — Tar Heels had a new feather in their caps today for the state's achievements in driver licensing.

Ned H. Dearborn, president of the National Safety Council, wrote Gov. Kerr Scott that North Carolina has been voted an award for its "outstanding achievement" in driver licensing, and the council offered its congratulations to the governor, his official family and the citizens of the state.

LEAKSVILLE — (UP) — I. O. Fat Griffith, used car dealer, went free under $10,000 bond today following his arrest in the pistol slaying of Tom Hatcher, 25, his brother in law.
