CAR Allowance Rebate System
Government Program

A government program to give incentive for buyers to trade in older vehicles for newer, more fuel efficient cars.  Known by the acronym CARS, the word "CAR" in CAR Allowance Rebate System is itself an acronym for "Consumer Assistance to Recycle," as written in the legislation creating the program, the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009.  The program is also known by the informal name "Cash for Clunkers."
