1926: Today is the final day for submitting applications to the U.S. Civil Service Commission for the open competitive examinations for Bureau of Public Roads positions: Chief engineering inspector-superintendent ($2,400) and senior engineering inspector-foreman ($1,860). As vacancies occur at higher levels, top pay for the former is $3,000 and for the latter, $2,400.

1929: At the dedication of the Hiouchi (Blue Water) Bridge on the Redwood Highway near the California/Oregon border, Bureau of Public Roads' Dr. L.I. Hewes says, "Sometimes I wonder whether we are aiding the states or whether the states are aiding the United States when we provide Federal aid for roads, for the entire country benefits through good highways."
