Automobiles have been hugely popular topics for the motion picture industry since camera first met motor car.  The Crittenden Automotive Library's Multimedia Collection includes over a week of video, much of it in the form of short clips, advertisements, and newsreels.  This Video Guide is a list of feature films, major documentaries, and television programs with basic descriptions of each, organized by year.

Where more information is available, links will take you to the film's Topic Page.  Because of copyright, we can't actually post all of the videos in the Library, but where they are available a film projector icon next to the Topic Page link will show which ones can be viewed here.

Double Speed1920 Feature Film

Speed Carr, driving from New York to Los Angeles to visit an uncle he has not seen in twenty years, is robbed of his car, clothing, and credentials by tramps and reaches the coast penniless wearing a borrowed suit of clothes. At his uncle's bank he is refused money. Carr pawns his watch under the name Barry Cole and, adopting this name, secures a position as chauffeur for Donald McPherson, father of Sallie McPherson, with whom he has fallen in love. Excuse My Dust1920 Feature Film

"Toodles" Walton, former automobile racer, has promised his wife Dorothy that he will refrain from speeding. But he gives into temptation and, through the influence of his father-in-law Mr. Ward, the judge deprives him of the right to pilot a car for six months. Troubled times follow Toodles. He nearly runs over and kills his child, his wife leaves him, and his father-in-law's automobile business, of which he is manager, is being plotted against by its competitors. An automobile race from Los Angeles to San Francisco is planned by the competitors in hope of obtaining the plans of Ward's new motor. A midnight auto race, a collision, and an exciting finish puts Toodles in San Francisco, where his child is ill. The competing company fails in its scheme and Toodles' wife forgives him. (Wikipedia)

The Crowd Roars1932 Feature Film

Motor racing champion Joe Greer (James Cagney) returns home to compete in an exhibition race featuring his younger brother Eddie, who has aspirations of becoming a champion. Joe's misogynistic obsession with "protecting" Eddie from "women" causes Joe to interfere with Eddie's relationship with Anne, leading to estrangement between Joe and Eddie, and between Joe and his longtime girlfriend Lee, who is made to feel "not good enough" to be around Eddie. Michael "Micky" Clark (Hickman) turns his Ford roadster into a hot rod with his friend Todd (Robert Arthur), advised by Michael's older brother Jeff, who learned about engines as a combat pilot. A musical comedy. Amateur inventor Joe Belden has his Indiana hometown in a tizzy over his new "horseless carriage" in 1895. It runs on gasoline, but the townspeople aren't impressed and only Joe's mom and his sweetheart Liz Bullitt are supportive. Mechanical breakdowns make Joe even more unpopular with some, including Liz's father, who prefers his daughter's other suitor, Ivy Leaguer Cyrus Ransom, Jr. A $5,000 first prize in a road race attracts newfangled contraptions from all over the land. Cy enters one himself that runs on ether and cheats in every way he can to drive Joe off the road. He succeeds, but Liz comes to the rescue and joins Joe all the way to the finish line—well, almost all the way. (Wikipedia)

Two veteran cars and their crews participating in the annual London to Brighton Veteran Car Run. Alan McKim , a young barrister, and his wife, Wendy, drive Genevieve, a 1904 Darracq. Their friend Ambrose Claverhouse (Kenneth More), a brash advertising salesman, his latest girlfriend, fashion model Rosalind Peters and her pet St. Bernard ride in a 1905 Spyker. The journey to Brighton goes well for Claverhouse, but the McKims' trip is complicated by several breakdowns, and they arrive very late. As Alan cancelled their accommodation in their usual plush hotel during a fit of pique, they are forced to spend the night in a dingy run-down hotel leaving Wendy feeling less than pleased. Checkpoint1956 Feature Film

Before a major motor race in Italy a man by the name of O'Donovan, is hired by Warren Ingram, owner of a British racing team to headhunt the designer of the rival Volta D'Italia team. However, he fails and instead makes a botched attempt to steal the original blue print designs by breaking into the factory and burglarizing an office safe in the Volta D'Italia factory located in Firenze, Italy (Florence). As a result of the trying to escape capture he destroys the factory in a fire and also kills five others. In an effort to smuggle O'Donovan out of Italy to were he will not cause harm to the reputation of Warren Ingram's industrial and racing interests a plot is developed to use the cover an International racing event to facilitate the escape the wanted man.(Wikipedia)

Special Delivery1963 Documentary
Starring: John Butler as the School Bus Driver (the real life police chief of Mansfield, Ohio, where this film was produced).
How Superior Coach Co. school buses move children safely to and from school, told through the experience of Mickey Miller, who is just a bit too young to ride the bus to school and yearns to do so. Dramatic film in Ektachrome which uses closeups well.

Fireball 5001966 Feature Film
Starring: Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Fabian Forte
Stock car racer "Fireball" Dave Owens from California goes to race in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where he intends on competing against local champ Sonny Leander Fox. Dave beats Leander in a race, impressing the latter's girlfriend, Jane, and the wealthy Martha Brian. Martha persuades Dave to drive in a cross country night race, not telling him he is actually smugging moonshine. She and her partner, Charlie Bigg, are pleased with Dave's results. Leander, who runs his own still and smuggling operation, is impressed with Dave's success, but this doesn't change the fact that he wants to beat Dave on the track, even challenging him to a dangerous figure-8 race. Grand Prix1966 Feature Film

A fictionalized account of the 1966 Formula 1 season with a mix of fictional characters and real drivers. Toshiro Mifune has a supporting role as a race team owner, inspired by Soichiro Honda. The film includes real-life racing footage and cameo appearances by drivers including Phil Hill, Graham Hill, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt and Jack Brabham. Other drivers who appeared in the film include Dan Gurney, Richie Ginther, Joakim Bonnier and Bruce McLaren.

With a run of 52 episodes, this television adaptation of a Japanese manga would begin a series of multiple television, video game, and a film adaptation of the series.  Storylines center around Speed Racer and his car, the Mach 5.
Bullitt1968 Feature Film
Starring: Steve McQueen
While not specifically an automotive-themed film in its entirety, Bullitt is iconic in automotive culture for featuring one of the most famous car chases in cinema history, 10 minutes and 53 seconds of a dark green 1968 Ford Mustang driven by Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) and a black 1968 Dodge Charger on the streets of San Francisco.

The first in the long line of "Herbie" films featuring the off-white anthropomorphic 1963 Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle) known as Herbie.

A driver is chased along remote desert roads by an intimidating-looking eighteen-wheeler, a 1960 Peterbilt 281 tanker truck. Steven Spielberg's first full-length theatrical release as director.
Corky1972 Feature Film
Starring: Robert Blake, Charlotte Rampling, Patrick O'Neal
Corky Curtiss is a Texas race-car mechanic obsessed with the sport. He is permitted to drive in local races on weekends, but boss Randy Dover replaces him with another driver because of his costly reckless ways.
American Graffiti1973 Feature Film
Starring: Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard, Paul Le Mat
Set in Modesto, California in 1962, the film is a study of the cruising and rock and roll cultures popular among the post–World War II baby boom generation. The film is told in a series of vignettes, telling the story of a group of teenagers and their adventures over a single night. (Wikipedia)

3 kids are accidentally involved with stolen diamonds and a 24-hour road rally.
43: The Petty Story1974 Feature Film

A made-for-television biopic of Richard Petty.

Gone in 60 Seconds1974 Feature Film
Starring: H.B. "Toby" Halicki, Marion Busia, Jerry Daugirda
A historic automotive film starring, written, and produced by H.B. Halicki, who acts in the film is Maindrian Pace, a professional car thief. His ring of thieves have to steal 48 cars in 5 days, but Pace is chased across six counties in the Los Angeles area when he tries to steal a yellow 1973 Ford Mustang Mach I, code named "Eleanor." The chase scene is 34 minutes long and destroys 93 vehicles. Many of the scenes were shot without a script or even the public's knowledge that a movie was being filmed when they react to the chase being carried out in front of them.
Herbie Rides Again1974 Feature Film
Starring: Helen Hayes, Stefanie Powers, Ken Berry
A comedy film, sequel to The Love Bug released six years earlier, and the second in the "Herbie" series of movies.
Death Race 20001975 Feature Film
Starring: David Carradine, Simone Griffeth, Sylvester Stallone
A "political satire cult action film." In the near future the ultimate sporting event is the Transcontinental Road Race. Contestants get score points for running people down as they speed across the country, and the sport has crazed fans who sacrifice themselves to the drivers.
This film would go on to inspire a new series of films starting in 2008.
Cannonball1976 Feature Film
Also known as "Carquake"
Starring: David Carradine, Bill McKinney, Veronica Hamel
The Trans-America Grand Prix is an illegal race held every year between Los Angeles (Santa Monica Pier) and New York City. Recently released from jail, where he was serving a sentence for killing a girl while driving drunk, racing driver Coy "Cannonball" Buckman (David Carradine) hopes to win the race and get his career back on track. Racing team Modern Motors have promised a contract to either him or his arch-rival Cade Redman who is also in the race – the contract will go to whichever of them wins. Coy is still on probation and when his parole officer, Linda Maxwell, with whom he is having an elaborate affair, discovers he will be crossing state lines in violation of his parole, she attempts to stop him, only to have him force her to accompany him on the race. A Christian religious film about a family where the father is a nonbeliever who tries to communicate with the spirit of a son who died in a stock car racing crash.
The Gumball Rally1976 Feature Film
Starring: Michael Sarrazin, Norman Burton, Raúl Juliá
About a group of drivers in a secret & illegal cross country race inspired by the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. This film in turn inspired the films Cannonball and Cannonball Run.

An eight minute one-shot film showing a car driving at high speed through the streets of Paris, France on a quiet Sunday morning. Filmed with a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 and dubbed with the engine noise of a Ferrari 275GTB.
Bobby Deerfield1977 Feature Film
Starring: Al Pacino, Marthe Keller, Anny Duperey
Formula One auto racer Bobby Deerfield is a calculating, control-obsessed loner who has become used to winning the checkered flag on the track. But after he witnesses a fiery crash that kills a teammate and seriously wounds a competitor, Deerfield becomes unsettled by the spectre of death. During a visit to the survivor, Deerfield's world is further set askew when he meets Lillian Morelli, a quirky, impulsive woman racing against time. (Wikipedia)

Hard-charging race car driver "Walkaway" Madden, nicknamed that because of his history of walking away from car crashes, just wants to win the big Manilla 1000 off-road race. Photojournalist C.C. Wainwright intends to ride with him in that race. But Walkaway just wants to get rid of her. Fast-talking promoter Bo Cochran (Hagman) wants the race completed by any means necessary. (Wikipedia)

Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo1977 Feature Film

The third in the "Herbie" series of films, this one has the Volkswagen competing in the fictional Trans-France Race from Paris to Monte Carlo.
Moonshine County Express1977 Feature Film

A moonshiner is murdered and his three daughters take over the "business." Featuring a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am.
Top Gear1977-2001 Television Program
Run: 45 series and 515 episodes
Starring: 35 presenters over the course of the series
A 30-minute motoring program in "magazine" format produced by the BBC. The series would be reworked and "reborn" in a new format for 2002.
Herbie Goes Bananas1980 Feature Film
Starring: Cloris Leachman, Harvey Korman, Charles Martin Smith
The fourth in the "Herbie" series, taking place en route to South America where the anthropomorphic Volkswagen is to be entered in the fictional Brazil Grand Primeo.
Used Cars1980 Feature Film
Starring Kurt Russell, Jack Warden, Gerrit Graham
A comedy-satire film co-written and directed by Robert Zemeckis, about two competing used car dealerships across the street from one another and run by competing brothers.
The Cannonball Run1981 Feature Film
Starring: Burt Reynolds, Jackie Chan, Roger Moore, Dom DeLuise, Farrah Fawcett
A fictionalized, comedic account of the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash written by Brock Yates.

Herbie, the Love Bug1982 Television Program

A short-lived sitcom that aired on CBS in the spring of 1982. It was cancelled after just five episodes and, for the next fifteen years, would mark Herbie's last new appearance in either television or film.
Christine1983 Feature Film

Based on a novel by famed horror/mystery writer Stephen King and directed by horror film specialist John Carpenter, Christine is a supernaturally possessed 1958 Plymouth Fury.

Cannonball Run II1984 Feature Film

A comedy film and sequel to 1981's Cannonball Run, featuring an all-star ensemble cast including the final feature film appearances of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.
Final Offer1984 Documentary
A Canadian film documenting the 1984 contract negotiations between the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) and GM. Ultimately, it provided a historical record of the birth of the Canadian Auto Workers Union (CAW) as Bob White, then head of the Canadian sector of the UAW, led his membership out of the International union and created the CAW. An account of the creation of the Tucker automobile company, directed by Tucker aficionado Francis Ford Coppola. The film would spark a renewed interest in the car, the short-lived company, and inventor Preston Tucker.

Japanese animated film about a courier framed for a kidnapping.
Speed Zone1989 Feature Film
Starring: Melody Anderson, Peter Boyle, Donna Dixon
Also known as Cannonball Fever, a comedy about around an illegal cross-country race inspired by the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. The twist that sets this apart from other "Cannonball" films is that all the racers are arrested before the race begins, and the sponsors have to quickly find new drivers.

It begins with Wreck-It Ralph leaving his old arcade game for others to win himself a medal, and most of the film subsequently takes place in a kart-racing game called Sugar Rush. When Vanellope uses Ralph's medal from another game as a coin to enter a race that King Candy has been preventing her from entering, Ralph has to help her build a car and learn to drive to get his medal back.
