"Transnet Racing Looking To Showcase Talent At RIR"
RICHMOND, Virginia (May 1, 2007) - - Alex Garcia, who made his NASCAR Busch Series (NBS) debut at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City in March of this year, will make enormous strides for Transnet Racing this weekend when he attempts to make his first ever start on an oval in the NASCAR Busch Series. The Circuit City 250 Presented by FUNAI, which begins at 8:00 PM on Friday, will also serve as Transnet Racing’s first NASCAR night race.
Garcia, who announced in December that his team would be transitioning from open-wheel racing to stock cars, is running a partial Busch Series schedule in 2007 in preparation for a full-time championship effort in 2008. The announcement came after Garcia experienced tremendous success as both a driver and owner in the Toyota Atlantic Championship.
The team is hoping to better their performance at Mexico City , Mexico . After an issue with Garcia's safety belt, found in pre-qualifying tech inspection, prevented the No. 98 Chevrolet from making a qualifying run, they were forced into the 43rd place starting position. Despite the poor start at the road course, which are notoriously difficult to fight for position, Transnet Racing was able to earn a promising 34th place finish.
This weekend, defaulting to the back of the field simply isn't an option, as the No. 98 Dixien/OmniSource Chevrolet is one of 16 cars that must qualify into the field on time. Regardless, the team is confident that it won’t be one of the cars loaded back into the hauler after time trials. The young, talented team plans on showcasing its talent and making a lasting impression on NASCAR and its fans.
"We know that failing to qualify on time is a possibility, but our team is prepared to make the field on Saturday," said driver and owner Alex Garcia. “I feel good about Richmond . It’s a very tough track, but I think we have a great car, both for qualifying and the race. I’m really, really looking forward to this weekend. It’s going to be a good race.â€
Although Alex has never raced a short track in the NBS, last season Transnet Racing made its ARCA RE/MAX Series debut at Salem Speedway in Salem , Indiana . Garcia made the 2006 event on time, qualifying 28th. Overcoming some early race mechanical issues, the team rallied on to collect a 20th place finish, an impressive run for a short track debut. With Salem and Mexico behind him, Garcia is looking forward to demonstrating what he can do on one of NASCAR’s legendary short tracks.
With years of road course racing behind him, Garcia demonstrates expertise with the sharp turns and short straightaways that short tracks have to offer. “I really like the hard braking,†explained Garcia. “That is where my background in road racing really pays off. Braking is where we picked up the most spots in Mexico , and I think it will work to our advantage this weekend as well.â€
