NASCAR Busch Series Race No. 11, Circuit City 250 Presented by FUNAI
Richmond International Raceway, Richmond , Virginia
Race Information: Event: Circuit City 250 Presented By FUNAI, Friday, May 4th, at 8:00 PM Local Time Track: Richmond International Raceway Qualifying: Friday, May 4th at 4:05 PM Local Time Track Length: 0.75-mile D-Shaped Oval
All Left Turns: Transnet Racing, founded in 2001, will attempt to make its first start on an oval track in the NASCAR Busch Series (NBS). The organization, which made its NBS debut in the Telcel-Motorola Mexico 200 at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City, Mexico, had a promising run on the 2.518 mile road course, finishing 34th. The team announced that it would run a partial 2007 NASCAR Busch Series season in December of last year, following several successful years of open-wheel competition.
Short Track Experience: Richmond International Raceway will not be the team’s first short track effort. Garcia made his ARCA RE/MAX Series debut last September at Salem Speedway, a wicked 0.555-mile paved short track in Indiana . Garcia started the event 28th, and brought home a 20th place finish.
Under The Lights: The Circuit City 250 Presented by FUNAI is the first NBS night race for Transnet Racing. The race, which begins at 8:00 PM Eastern Time, will be run entirely under the lights. This is only the second night race of the 2007 NASCAR Busch Series Season.
Venezuelan Pride: Garcia, a native of Caracas , Venezuela , made international news in March when he became the first Venezuelan to ever race in NASCAR. This weekend, the No. 98 Dixien/OmniSource Chevrolet will be running a very special Venezuelan flag-themed paint scheme, proudly flying the yellow, blue, and red colors of his native country. The team’s primary sponsor, Dixien LLC, is a Hispanic Minority Business Enterprise.
A Rarity In The Sport: Driver Alex Garcia is in unique position in NASCAR, as he is one of only a few drivers playing two roles on race weekends. In addition to piloting the No. 98 Dixien/OmniSource Chevrolet, Garcia also performs the key role of team owner. Garcia, who has been participating in professional motorsports for over eight years, has owned his cars and his team since the beginning of his career.
Timing Is Everything: Transnet Racing is one of 16 teams that will be required to make it into this weekend’s race on time. The team will be putting every effort into assuring that the Dixien/OmniSource Chevrolet not only makes the race, but begins with a competitive starting position. The team is bringing chassis No. 005 to the track, which is the newest car in the Transnet Racing stable.
The Younger Crowd: The Transnet Racing crew is one of fresh, young talent, but don’t let their ages fool you. The enthusiastic and capable crew members are rich in experience. In addition to many being graduates of the NASCAR Technical Institute, each has an impressive background in Motorsports, ranging from work in the late model and open-wheel ranks, to experience with some of NASCAR’s biggest and most successful teams.
In Memoriam: Alex Garcia, along with the rest of the NASCAR Busch Series field, will be sporting a Virginia Tech decal above the B-post of the No. 98 Transnet Racing Chevrolet in memory of the lives lost in last month’s shooting on the Blacksburg , Virginia campus. All three of NASCAR’s premier series’ have been running the logo since the April 20 event at Phoenix International Raceway.
