Jolted Finish Overshadows Career Best Start For McGilton In Winchester

WINCHESTER, Indiana (May 7, 2007) - - After qualifying on the outside pole (second) for Sunday’s Winchester ARCA 200, Brewco Motorsports and Phillip McGilton couldn’t wait for the start of the event. When the checkered flag flew, the team had a whole different outlook.

Qualifying second was a huge boost of confidence for McGilton, who led the ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie-of-the-Year standings heading into the 20th ARCA event held at Winchester Speedway. Knowing confidence was on his side and a machine fast enough to sweep the victory; McGilton was hoping luck would be on his side.

Unfortunately, the team’s shining weekend was quickly overturned early in the 200-lap event. Following pole sitter Michael McDowell for the first 31 laps of the event, McGilton’s No. 47 Montgomery Equipment Ford Fusion was studying how to maneuver past the fellow rookie. He didn’t think what happened next was possible.

On the 32nd circuit of the event, as the group headed into turn one, contact from the No. 6 of Dexter Bean clipped the left-rear of McGilton’s machine sending the Brewco Motorsports prepared machine hard into the outside wall. McGilton, Bean, Frank Kimmel, Justin Marks and Brian Keselowski were some of the notable drivers involved.

Everyone except McGilton were able to continue. The Montgomery Equipment machine suffered damage beyond repair sending the team packing early with a disappointing and frustrating 30th place effort.

“I don’t know what to say,” said McGilton. “Dexter (Bean) just turned me. I think he was being a little too aggressive early on and it hurt a lot of people. A little patience goes a long way. It was way too early for an accident like that to happen. My Brewco Motorsports team didn’t deserve to load a destroyed racecar into the hauler, but I guess that’s racing and we’ll just move on to Kentucky .”

Immediately following the race, Bean who finished eighth climbed from his machine and darted over to the Brewco Motorsports pit to personally apologize to McGilton for the early-race contact.

“Dexter (Bean) came over and said he screwed up,” added McGilton. “He said he was trying to make a pass and his car got loose and hit me. I accept his apology. I know he didn’t mean to intentionally do it. The results though don’t change. We’re in a hole heading into Kentucky . Hopefully we can pick up the pieces and put our No. 47 back upfront where it belongs next Saturday night.”

Indeed, the 30th place effort took a hit on the team in the points standings. The team slipped three positions from third to seventh ten points behind Michael McDowell, fifty markers from fifth place Justin South and 75 credits to his original point’s position of fourth now held by Bobby Gerhart.

Next up for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is the first of two trips to Kentucky Speedway. The Buckle-Up 150 is set for this upcoming Saturday, May 12 set to take the green flag shortly after 8:00pm local time.
