The step-grandmother of U.S. President Barack Obama sustained minor injuries in a car accident in western Kenya.

Officials say Sarah Obama suffered bruises and shock after the car she was in rolled over on Saturday night.

Relatives say the 90-year-old woman was traveling to her home in the village of Kogelo when the accident took place. They say the driver of the car lost control while trying to pass another vehicle.

Sarah Obama was treated and released from an area hospital.

Mr. Obama referred to his step-grandmother as “granny” in his memoir “Dreams from My Father.” She is the second wife of the president's paternal grandfather.
