Toyota says it plans to build more than nine million vehicles worldwide next year, matching General Motors' estimated production for 2005.
The figure represents an increase of about 10 percent over Toyota's While GM's sales have been sluggish amid rising fuel prices, Toyota's have been projected output this year.booming.
The company says it expects to sell 8.85 million vehicles in 2006, a nine percent increase over this year. General Motors, currently the world's largest automaker, sold 8.99 million vehicles in 2004 - the last year for which complete figures are available.
