A regional train in eastern Germany derailed after crashing into an automobile Tuesday, injuring more than 20 people, at least six seriously.

The auto hit by the train was pushed onto the tracks by the vehicle behind it, but the driver managed to escape before impact with the train.

The accident near Leipzig, south of Berlin, caused three of the four train cars to derail, with one tipping on its side.

Rescue crews were on the scene, and helicopters flew the most seriously injured to local hospitals for treatment.

Deutsche Bahn, the German railway operator, says train traffic has been rerouted.
