Mission Man Sentenced for Involuntary Manslaughter

PIERRE, SD—United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Mission, South Dakota man charged with iInvoluntary manslaughter was sentenced on March 28, 2011, by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Reuben W. One Star, age 21, was sentenced to 32 months in prison, three years of supervised release, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund, and $24,745.10 in restitution.

One Star was indicted for involuntary manslaughter, child abuse, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol with a minor present in the motor vehicle by a federal grand jury on September 14, 2010. The charge relates to One Star driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol near Rosebud, South Dakota, on September 2, 2010. He lost control of the vehicle, which then struck another vehicle. A small child in that vehicle died as a result of the collision. He pled guilty to the charge of involuntary manslaughter on January 5, 2011.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Rosebud Law Enforcement Services. Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case.

One Star must report to the custody of the United States Marshals on March 29, 2011.
