St. Croix Man Sentenced to Seven Years in Prison for Use of Firearm During Carjacking

ST. CROIX—Senior District Court Judge Raymond L. Finch, on June 7, 2012, sentenced Jared James, 19, to a mandatory seven years in prison for using a firearm during a carjacking, announced United States Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe, Virgin Islands Police Commissioner Henry White, and Joseph S. Campbell, Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge. Judge Finch also sentenced James to three years of supervised release and ordered him to pay restitution in the amount of $2,800.

On March 1, 2012, James pleaded guilty to using a firearm during a crime of violence. According to the plea documents filed with the court, James used a firearm to steal a car from a female on October 19, 2011, at the Pickled Greek restaurant on St. Croix. Police subsequently found the vehicle near Halfpenny Beach in a damaged condition.

The case was investigated by the Virgin Islands Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rhonda Williams-Henry.
