Carjacker Sentenced to 20 Years in Federal Prison

U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Tennessee
June 15, 2012

MEMPHIS—Marquis Luckett, age 22, of Memphis, Tennessee, was sentenced on June 14, 2012 to 20 years in prison for carjacking and using a firearm during a crime of violence by Chief United States District Court Judge Jon P. McCalla, announced United States Attorney Edward L. Stanton, III.

On the night of January 27, 2011, Marquis Luckett committed two carjackings within a half-hour period. Luckett carjacked a Dodge Durango from a victim in the parking lot of her apartment complex. During this carjacking, Luckett displayed a pistol and threatened the victim and her 10- and 1-year-old children. Luckett then drove about a half-mile away, where he tried to abduct a young woman walking down the street by forcing her into the Durango. The young woman was able to break away from Luckett and escape. Luckett then drove the Durango to another nearby apartment complex, where, again at gunpoint, he carjacked a Chevrolet Impala from a second victim who was getting out of her vehicle.

The case was investigated by the Safe Streets Task Force, which is composed of investigators from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Memphis Police Department, Bartlett Police Department, and Germantown Police Department. The case was prosecuted by United States Attorney Edward L. Stanton, III, and Assistant United States Attorney Tony Arvin on behalf of the government.
