The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) latest rollover resistance ratings and crash test results are now available on the agency's World Wide Web site: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/NCAP/BASC2002/. This information is for 2002 model year vehicles.

Beginning with release of today's data, NHTSA is specifically noting safety concerns that arise as a result of its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) tests and that are not reflected in the dummy measurements used to calculate star ratings. In today's and future advisories, NHTSA will identify the vehicles that have such safety concerns.
During the side impact test of the Buick Rendezvous, the driver's door unlatched and opened. The Rendezvous is equipped with standard automatic door locks, but NHTSA test protocol requires that the doors be unlocked. A General Motors test showed that the door remained closed under similar test conditions when the automatic door locks are activated. A door opening during a side impact crash increases the likelihood of occupant ejection.
The New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) reports rollover resistance ratings and crash test results in a range of one to five stars, with five stars showing the best safety protection for vehicles. Frontal tests should be compared only within the same weight class.
