State Tax Commission Warns Serious Congestion, Result of Delay.
1923 PLATES ARE READY
Increase Main Office Facilities, to Open New Branches to Aid Distribution.
Automobile owners have been so dilatory about getting their license plates for 1923 the State Tax Commission yesterday issued a warning that unless the owners co-operate with the commission by getting their plates now, congestion which will inconvenience the motorists in bound to occur during the latter part of December.
To avoid delays in distribution, facilities of the commission at its main offices, Sixty-fifth Street and Broadway, Manhattan, and 317 Washington Street, Brooklyn, have been increased. In addition, several branch offices will be opened in public buildings on Dec. 4.
"The first day of obtaining the plates was Nov. 15," says the commission's statement. "Despite the plans made to accommodate an early rush, the commission states only a very small proportion of the owners of machines have called to obtain their license, it being the apparent intention to again put off the duty until the last days of December.
"When an owner of an automobile who waited until the last minute was compelled to stand in line before he could be accommodated, the records show he grumbled and criticised the department for being delayed. No matter how big the place or how large the force, it would be impossible to accommodate all those late comers who waited until the last hour.
"In addition to the main office in Manhattan and the branch in Brooklyn, the commission will open the following branches on Dec. 4:
"Borough of Bronx—Borough Hall, Third and Tremont Avenues, Local Board Room.
"Borough of Richmond—Borough Hall, St. George, Staten Island, Room 121.
"Borough of Queens—Jamaica Board of Trade, Butler Building, Twombly Place and Jamaica Avenue.
"Ninth Coast Defense Command Armory, 125 West Fourteenth Street, Manhattan.
"One Hundred and Fourth Field Artillery Armory, Broadway and Sixty-eighth Street, Manhattan."
