“Rookie-of-the-Year Contender Hopes To Lead Fourth Consecutive Race”
MARNE, Michigan (July 3, 2007) - - The second half of the 2007 ARCA RE/MAX Series (ARS) season begins with Saturday’s Request Foods-GFS 200 and Rookie-of-the-Year contender Phillip McGilton would like to do nothing more than cap off his Berlin Raceway debut with a victory.
Much of the 2007 ARS has been a trial of firsts for the driver of the No. 47 SIPerformance Ford Fusion. Strong showings at USA International Speedway, Salem Speedway, Winchester Speedway, Toledo Speedway and Iowa Speedway have McGilton feeling relaxed heading into the tricky Marne , Michigan based track.
"The Brewco Motorsports team has been able to put together a strong short track program this season and I really expect no different this weekend, said McGilton. Berlin has no backstretch wall, and that’s really different, but I’m sure it will be an exciting weekend.”
The development driver for Brewco Motorsports heads to Berlin Raceway on the heels of a strong sixth place effort at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) last month. McGilton, for the third straight race put his No. 47 out front and in control for a number of laps before being overtaken to eventually settle for sixth, awarding the Marion, Illinois native with is fifth top-10 finish of the season.
“We’re looking at working our way back up in the point standings,” offered McGilton, who will make his 18th career ARS start this weekend. “Every time we’ve been able to make up some ground, we’ve had some bad luck that has held the team back. The good news is that we made up some ground on everyone at Michigan a couple weeks ago. We need to keep doing that every week. If we do, it’s going to be one heck of a battle at the end of the season.”
The ARCA RE/MAX Series enjoyed a two-week break from competition following Michigan , but McGilton surrounded himself with racecars.
On June 23, McGilton joined his Brewco Motorsports team for the NASCAR Busch Series race at The Milwaukee Mile to further familiarize himself with the track, as the ARCA RE/MAX Series will make a stop their later this year. McGilton watched fellow Brewco drivers and teammates Jason Keller and Bobby East tackle the one-mile oval from the spotters stand with Shawn Parker, Brewco’s Director of Competition and Crew Chief for the No. 47 SIPerformance Ford.
Last week, McGilton joined a host of other ARS teams at Kentucky Speedway during an open test to prepare themselves for next week’s event at the 1.5-mile speed plant. In May, McGilton captured a top-10 finish in the Buckle-Up Kentucky 150.
The Request Foods-GFS 200 (200 laps/88 miles) is the 12th of 23 events on the 2007 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. The 20th ARCA race held at Berlin Raceway is a one-day show. Practice begins Saturday, July 7 with an hour and a half practice (2:30pm-4:00pm) session planned. ARCA SIM Factory pole qualifying is set for later in the day at 5:00pm Local Time. The event will take the green flag later that night at 8:30pm Local Time. The race will not be televised. However, additional race coverage can be found online at arcaracing.com
