The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today released a list of March 2004 auto safety recalls announced and urged consumers to have the problems fixed promptly.
This list identifies the make and model of the vehicle or equipment involved, with a brief description of the safety problem.
Under federal law, safety problems must be remedied without cost to consumers. Historically, 72 percent of the owners of vehicles with safety problems have the recall work performed.
NHTSA said manufacturers are required to mail a recall notice to all purchasers, owners, and dealers when a safety defect or noncompliance with federal safety standards is found. The agency urges owners to wait until they receive notification from the manufacturer before contacting their dealers to schedule the repair work. Not all vehicles of a particular make and model may be subject to the recall.
Consumers can get up-to-the-minute information on safety recall campaigns, or information on the recall history of a particular make and model of car, truck, motorcycle, or child safety seat, by calling the agency's toll-free Auto Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or by accessing NHTSA on the Internet at http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov. The Hotline also can be used to report safety problems.

Defect: On some sport utility vehicles equipped with a 4.0-liter engine, the crankshaft position sensor wiring insulation may crack and expose the wire. In the presence of moisture, this could result in sensor malfunction, which could cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will replace the crankshaft position sensor. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification began on March 29, 2004. Owners may contact DaimlerChrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Defect: Certain passenger vehicles equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 engine have a condition in which the nylon tubing used in the fuel rail construction may degrade and crack. Additionally, the MY 1995 Aurora uses a unique underhood fuel return line that may crack. Cracking of the fuel rail or return line tubing can result in a fuel leak into the engine compartment. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.
Remedy: Dealers will install a new fuel rail assembly constructed out of stainless steel. Dealers will also install a revised chassis fuel return line. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification is expected to begin during May 2004. Owners may contact Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.

Defect: On certain sport utility vehicles, a structural support at the latch attachment in the rear liftgate may be inadequate to retain the latch to the liftgate in certain severe vehicle crash events. If the liftgate were to open in a vehicle crash, an occupant could be ejected from the vehicle resulting in increased risk of personal injury.
Remedy: Dealers will add structural reinforcements to the liftgate in the area adjoining the latch assembly. Note: This is an expansion of a previous recall (03V-211). The manufacturer has not yet provided an owner notification schedule. Owners may contact Buick at 1-866-608-8080.

At speeds below 5 mph, the ABS sensor signal noise may cause the ABS electronic control unit (ECU) to activate the ABS, extending the stopping distance. If an extended stopping distance occurs, it could result in a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will reprogram the ABS ECU. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification was expected to begin during April 2004. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

For the front passenger seating position, the automatic suppression feature option was chosen. The front passenger seat is equipped with a seat cushion bladder and sensors that are used for occupant detection under the standard. When a six-year-old child dummy was placed in the required positions, the air bag was not suppressed.
Remedy: Dealers will inspect the front passenger seat cushion/sensor assembly. If the seat cushion/sensor is found to be operating improperly,c the seat will be removed and recalibrated.
