Alex Tagliani qualified the Barracuda Racing car in 17th place for the first of two IndyCar races taking place this weekend on the streets of Toronto.
The day started strong when Tagliani was tenth quickest in morning practice. He picked up several positions near the end of the session, commenting to his crew that things were “definitely moving in the right direction.”
The Canadian driver was in the first group for round one of a Firestone Fast Six qualifying format. He finished ninth in the session with a lap time of 1:00.4586.
“We have some work to do for the race,” said Tagliani. “I don’t think we have a handle on what we need for the Barracuda Racing car to go fast at the moment, but we’re not going to give up. We just have to work at bit harder and find a way to get that pace we’re looking for.”
Team owner Bryan Herta added, “Our qualifying time was very close as we just missed advancing to the second round by less than 0.1 seconds. We’re looking forward to the standing start and watching the Barracuda car moving forward in the race.”
For the first time in IZOD IndyCar Series history, the field will begin the race with a standing start. Tagliani is no stranger to standing starts, however. His last one was 2011 when he participated in the V8 Supercars Series.
Race one of the Honda Indy Toronto will take place Saturday, July 13 with an estimated green flag at 3:40 p.m. ET. The 85-lap competition will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network in the US and SportsNet in Canada.
