MOORESVILLE, North Carolina (August 1, 2007) - - It wasn’t the finish that Michelle Theriault was looking for, but the rookie driver persevered through a heavy attrition race to finish 20th at Adirondack International Speedway Saturday night.
The Spraker Racing Enterprises team was banking on a previous test session at the New York-based track to aid them last weekend. With rain washing out qualifying, the field was set by 2007 NASCAR Busch East Series car owner points forcing the teams to rely on the lone practice session to prepare themselves for the event.
In practice, Theriault maneuvered 19th fastest with a time of 17.555 seconds at 102.535 MPH. With qualifying canceled, Theriault would advance seven positions from her practice effort to take the green flag in the 13th position.
At the start of the event, Theriault struggled with the unique track characteristics that Adirondack showed. With guidance from car owner and spotter Jeff Spraker, Theriault tried to advance herself through the field but cautions played against the NBES Rookie-of-the-Year candidate.
While attempting to adjust her lines around AIS (Adirondack International Speedway), Theriault would fall victim to the leaders during a span of green-flag racing taking her two laps off the lead circuit. While vying for the lucky dog award, Theriault wouldn't get the break and would be forced to dig deep and battle to the end.
When the checkered flag flew, Theriault roared across with a 20th place finish completing 148 of 150 laps.
“It wasn’t the run we were looking for,” offered Theriault. “I couldn’t find a comfortable way around the track and it played against us. We can’t afford to have finishes like this and while everyone is disappointed in the outcome, we were able to bring the car home in one piece and gain some ground in the standings. There is some light at the end of the tunnel.”
Indeed, Theriault did leap in the championship standings rising from 14th to 12th sitting 106 points from 11th place competitor Jeffery Earnhardt. 133 markers separate Theriault from entering the top-10 in the championship chase.
“Our goal is to be in the top-10 by the end of the season. We made a major step forward towards completing that goal Saturday night.”
Next up for the NASCAR Busch East Series is a race full of rights and lefts when the series takes center stage at Lime Rock Park in Lime Rock, Connecticut on August 18.
Before returning to NBES schedule, Theriault and Spraker Racing Enterprises will leap over to the ARCA RE/MAX Series to participate in the TOYOTA ARCA 150 from the 1.333-mile track next Saturday. Theriault will carry her familiar colors driving the No. 37 GLOCK, Inc. Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS.
