Differentiating the V8-Powered 2015 Dodge Challenger Trimlines

While most of the automotive discussions online pertaining to the 2015 Dodge Challenger focus on the 707 horsepower models, it has been brought to my attention that some people aren’t clear on what the difference is between the different Hemi powered models so today, I bring you a detailed look at the 2015 Challenger in R/T, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat form.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger is offered with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 and three different Hemi V8 engines, including the 5.7L, 6.4L and supercharged 6.2L Hellcat mill - all of which are offered with either an 8-speed automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual transmission. The 3.6L V6 is only available in the Challenger SXT and the 5.7L Hemi is only available in the Challenger R/T. The Hellcat Hemi is obviously only available in the SRT Hellcat models, but the 6.4L, 392 cubic inch Hemi is offered in both the R/T Scat Pack and the SRT 392. Some people seem to think that the Hellcat Hemi replaced the 2014 SRT 392 and others believe that the R/T Scat Pack has the same engine as the R/T, since it shares the badges.

Due to the lack of information, I wanted to put together a piece highlighting what makes the different trimlines different in the 2015 Challenger. I’m not talking about which radios or interior colors are included in the packages - I’m talking about the things that make the Challenger such a potent muscle car.

The R/T and SRT 392

Since the R/T and SRT 392 packages existed in the previous model year and the key features haven’t changed much, I will begin with them.

As was the case with the 2014 model year, the 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T comes with the 5.7L V8 with 375 horsepower and 410lb-ft of torque when mated to the standard 6-speed manual transmission. The R/T comes with a standard sport tuned suspension and 4 wheel disc brakes under standard 20 inch wheels wrapped in all season performance tires.

The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT 392 comes with the same 6.4L Hemi as it did in 2014, except now it has more power - boasting 485 horsepower and 475lb-ft of torque. The SRT 392 comes with 3-mode adjustable suspension, Brembo brakes with 15.4 inch front rotors, unique body components including the front fascia and the hood, SRT badging and a fully loaded leather interior. If you want the handling and stopping power of the Hellcat Hemi without the monster power plant, the SRT 392 is the car for you.

The SRT Hellcat

Essentially, the 2015 Challenger SRT 392 gives you all of the features of the SRT Hellcat package except for the 707 horsepower Hellcat Hemi so in addition to that monster blown engine, buyers also get a unique exterior package (which includes the Air Catcher headlight), the 3-mode suspension, the monster Brembo brake package and all of the bells and buzzers inside. The Hellcat Challenger comes with pretty much every option that you can get, plus a 707 horsepower engine.

The R/T Scat Pack

The R/T Scat Pack is basically the drivetrain of the SRT 392 in the body of the Challenger R/T with the high performance suspension and braking packages from the old SRT 392 Core Challenger. This suspension setup is tuned for high performance and while the brakes aren’t as big as the SRT models - it still features a large Brembo brake setup that will help bring the 485hp Mopar muscle car to a stop in a big hurry. The Scat Pack is ideal for someone who wants to go very fast, with 485hp making it one of the most powerful cars in America for the price, but it doesn’t have the high tech performance goodies that you get with the SRT models. The Scat Pack also doesn’t have an interior that is quite as heavily loaded as the SRT models, allowing buyers to get into the 485hp Challenger for less than $40k.

Summary

To summarize, the 2015 Dodge Challenger R/T has sport suspension and a 375hp Hemi. The R/T Scat Pack has a more aggressive suspension setup than the R/T, Brembo brakes and the 485hp Hemi from the SRT lineup. The SRT 392 has the 485hp Hemi, the 3-mode adjustable suspension setup, 15.4" Brembo brakes and a unique body design and the SRT Hellcat has the same suspension and brakes as the SRT 392, but it of course comes with the 707hp supercharged Hemi and some exterior items that are unique from what comes on the SRT 392.

All of the 2015 Dodge Challenger models are on sale now and most dealerships in the country should have access to all of them - although there is a long wait for the SRT Hellcat.
