Concord, N.C. – With both of Friday’s qualifying sessions lost to the weather, the pressure was on for TJ Zizzo and his PEAK Motor Oil Top Fuel team to make the show for Sunday’s Dollar General 4-Wide NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway. While the veteran spun the tires in the first round, he put down a solid 3.883-second pass in the final round to qualify 15th. He will face defending race winner Spencer Massey, defending NHRA Mello Yello Series class champion Antron Brown, and Brandon Bernstein in E1 Sunday.
The PEAK team could have taken advantage of near-perfect racing weather at the track Saturday, but felt conservative was the way to do to ensure a berth in the field.
“It felt good, nice and smooth,” he said after qualifying. “I looked up at the scoreboard when I crossed the line and said, ‘Wow, cool! A 3.88, just like we thought.’ We knew we could go faster, but we didn’t want to be able to go faster due to the fact that if you start pushing these things and spin the tires two runs in a row, you will have no data and you’re going home. We knew what we had to do to run a 3.88 and that’s what we did.”
The Chicago native joins two other Top Fuelers, Brittany Force and Leah Pruett, as 4-Wide n00bs. While he admitted earlier in the week he was a little apprehensive about the staging process, once he went to the line, his racing instincts took over.
“You just go up there and do your deal,” he said with a laugh. “The first run, the guys next to me, they went in and double bulbed it right away, rolled in all the way right away, then I see the other guy go in really deep right away and I was like ‘TJ, just take a deep breath and relax.’ So when all those antics were going on, I just took a deep breath and relaxed and went down the track.”
Shawn Langdon took top qualifier honors going into Sunday’s race, laying down a 3.751-second pass. Langdon, who earned his first-career Top Fuel victory at this track last fall, faces Sidnei Frigo, Tony Schumacher, and Force in the first round.
