Concord, N.C. – Sometimes the biggest victories are small ones. For TJ Zizzo and the PEAK Motor Oil Top Fuel team, making the field for Sunday’s Dollar General 4-Wide NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway was a win for the team considering they were on a three-race DNQ streak coming into this weekend’s race at Bruton Smith’s Bellagio of Drag Strips.
Zizzo faced Brandon Bernstein, defending event winner Spencer Massey, and defending NHRA Mello Yello Series champion Antron Brown in the first quad. Although the second-generation veteran ran a respectable 3.870-second ET, Zizzo finished third to Massey and Bernstein who advanced. The fact the part-time team was able to beat Brown to the stripe by .001 seconds shows the work Zizzo Racing has put in is beginning to pay off.
“In Charlotte, we made some strides,” Zizzo said after his run. “In Gainesville, we started those strides and we’ll continue to do that in Houston.”
Much is made of the unique 4-Wide format by drivers, fans, and media, but Zizzo, an event rookie coming into Sunday, said once he was strapped in, it was like any other race.
“The hype from the outside of the car is pretty intense,” he said. “Inside the car? Same deal, just different race track. Sure, there’s a lot of different lights to look at, but overall, our performance here at Zizzo Racing/PEAK Motor Oil camp is pretty stellar. We haven’t left the race track with smiles in a long, long time.
“The last time we qualified was a little time ago, so now we’re off on the right track and off to Houston and looking forward to it.”
Class polesitter Shawn Langdon, along with Massey, Bernstein, and Zizzo’s fellow Chicago native Tony Schumacher advanced to the final four Sunday.
Zizzo Racing and the PEAK Motor Oil Top Fuel dragster is headed to the 26th Annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals outside Houston, Texas April 26-28. Nitro qualifying is set for 4:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. local time on Friday and again on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. Eliminations are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Sunday.
