New Models Boost British Car Building

Here’s a surprising fact. Britain is the 14th largest car producer in the world. Thailand, Canada and Mexico trump us for units built and even hard-pressed Spain produces more. Never mind; given our financial woes after years of economic incompetence our car industry is doing very well indeed. Perhaps we should dump politicians and vote the auto industry bosses instead because they‘ve certainly turned the car business around.
Britain is on course to beat the previous record high for car production - 1.92 million motors - that dates back to 1972 and the dark dismal days of British Leyland. Figures released by the SMMT show that nearly a million vehicles where built in the first eight months of this year. Extrapolating that, it is reckoned that we will make 2.2 million units annually by 2016.
We’ve got Nissan’s success and the might and luxury of Jaguar Land Rover; there’s the high-end market with Aston Martin, Rolls Royce and Bentley and, in the regular market place, Ford, Vauxhall, the ever popular Mini and much more.
Whatever else happens to this sceptred isle one thing is certain. We can still make stuff even when we don’t ultimate own the company. Our car industry is something to be proud of.
