Fort Atkinson, WI (September 10, 2012) Wisconsin Dells Raceway Park owner, Wayne Lensing, made the decision late last week to change the September Showdown date and reformat the program. The change sent Mid-American scrambling for another race venue for Saturday, September 15th.
After a flurry of text messages, e-mails, phone calls and meetings, Series owner Doug Strasburg and Jefferson Speedway owner Terry Tucker came to a compromise. Due to time constraints with the Jefferson’s 32nd Annual Short Track Championship weekend schedule of events already being laid out, Mid-Am qualifying and heats will be scrubbed and Jefferson will host a 50 lap Mid-American feature Saturday evening immediately following the second Late Model feature.
“We’re very excited to be able to bring Mid-American back to Jefferson (Speedway)”, Strasburg said. “The last time Mid-American was there was 1995. None of the current entries have ever had a Mid-Am car on the track.”
The driver with arguably the most laps turned on Jefferson Speedway of the Series drivers would be Scott Null, though none were in Mid-American competition. He began there in Mini-stocks in 1984 moving up to Late Models running Jefferson from 1992 to 2003. Null has also campaigned a Super Late elsewhere in ’97 and ’98 and began his Mid-Am career in 2001. He often overlaps classes and even race activities. This season alone he juggles racing his Mid-Am car, teching the ASA trucks and making occasional starts in an ARCA ride. If auto racing is involved, look around for Scott Null.
Null will have his hands full with his highly adaptable veteran Mid-American rivals. Current point leader, Jeremy Spoonmore of Somonauk, IL methodically marched to the front of the point race at Madison International Speedway a week ago. Others swapping the top spot in the 2012 Mid-Am “Point Race Extreme” are former champs Lyle Nowak of Wausau, WI running a strong second in the standings and James Swan of Genoa City, WI currently sixth as well as smooth driving rookie Ryan Farrell of East Troy, WI in third. Another veteran quietly climbing point ladder this season is Jake Finney of Sycamore, IL currently fourth in the standings with relative newcomer, Brad Keith of West Bend, WI in fifth.
If you’ve never experienced an “Annual Short Track Championship” at Jefferson Speedway, you need to check it out Friday and Saturday nights, September 14th and 15th. The challenging track, the lighting, the food and the turn one and two spectator hill only compliment the action on the track. Jefferson Speedway is located halfway between Cambridge and Jefferson on Hwy 18. See www.jeffersonspeedway.com for details or contact them at 920-648-2705.
