Mid American Stock Car Series
July 9, 2011
FORT ATKINSON, Wis. (Reprint July 9, 2011) – Through its 19 seasons the Mid-American Stock Car Series has raced at some of the top venues in the Midwest such as the Milwaukee Mile and Road America. On July 16 Mid-American will be able to add Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis to that prestigious list.
“Not being able to run Milwaukee or Road America in 2011, I was pleased to be able to add LORI to the schedule,” said MASCS co-owner Doug Strasburg. “The former Indianapolis Raceway Park (IRP) is a first class facility and will be another first class track for the drivers to add to their résumés.”
Mid-American will co-sanction a non-points event with the Advanced Racing Association at the .686-mile oval in Clermont, Ind. The event will be titled the Iron Brigade 100 and is a tribute to the 150th anniversary of the Iron Brigade – a Civil War unit comprised of soldiers from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, the very states that will be represented in the race.
“The event was the brainchild of Russ Willingham,” Strasburg explained. “He has gone to great lengths to bring this event to fruition. This inaugural race will be the test bed to build an annual event that will bring the best of the best in the upper mid-west together to thrill fans for years to come.”
It has been almost ten seasons since Mid-American last traveled to Indiana. The series has traveled as far as Boswell, Ind., Springport, Mich., Lebannon Mo., Council Bluffs Iowa and Brainerd MN. From its home base in Fort Atkinson, the trip to Clermont is an estimated 291 miles. The series, however will race at Grundy the night prior, an approximate 200 miles from Clermont.
“Mid-American drivers are quite excited to visit another new first class track,” Strasburg said. “Traveling is part of the Mid-American way. As it approaches the 20 year mark, it is exciting to be able to add a track of this caliber to the many other tracks these grass roots wheeled warriors have visited in the upper mid-west over the years.”
Aside from racing at a top facility, Mid-American drivers should have plenty of incentive to make the tow. With lap contingencies and a halfway bonus from Meineke Car Care Centers, the winner could take home $3,000. Pocketing the entire winners purse, however, will be difficult as the field will face a steep invert with plenty of time for the faster drivers to find their way to the front.
Due to the co-sanctioning Mid-American drivers will be able to utilize their own rules and tires. They will face something out-of-the-ordinary, as well – a fuel stop at the halfway point which will restack the field for the final 50 laps.
Fans are encouraged to get involved by sponsoring a lap for $20. The fan (or fans) will receive two tickets (valued at $20) and will have their name read before the start of the race. Fans can send a check or M.O. to Iron Brigade 100 1850 Fisher Ave. Speedway, IN 46224.
