NEW DESTINATION, NEW POINT LEADER FOR MID-AMERICAN

Matt Panure
Mid American Stock Car Series
July 11, 2007

(Fort Atkinson, WI), July 11-- This Saturday July 14th, for the first time in its 15 year history the Mid-American Stock Car Series will invade Dells Raceway Park in Wisconsin Dells, WI. “Wisconsin Dells has had a long history of providing serious and successful racing,” said series co-owner Doug Strasburg. Very few laps have been turned by Mid-American drivers at DRP which wipes away any advantage the savvy veterans of the series have over the young guns.

The series will head to the Dells with a new point leader. James Swan was on top of the standings for the final ten races of the 2006 season on his way to his second championship. Swan found himself in the same position after the first three races of the 2007 campaign. But after and 11th place finish and Swan’s DNF at Madison, Jeremy Spoonmore of has risen to the top of the Mid-American standings.

The 24-year-old driver from Somonauk, IL is looking for his first Mid-American championship. Spoonmore already boasts a championship in the Mid-American triple crown at Madison International Speedway in 2004 and has the distinction of being the final Mid-American winner at the Lake Geneva Raceway. Spoonmore has enjoyed a successful season in 2007 with two top five finishes, four top ten finishes and a win at MIS last Saturday.

However, Spoonmore has three-time Mid-American champion in Bill Prietzel only nine points behind him. Prietzel, the veteran from Richfield, WI, is one of the few drivers who has turned competitive laps at DRP. He did so in the Midwest Super Truck Series in the late 90s. Behind Prietzel is long time Mid-American ace Bobby Gutknecht from Oak Creek, WI. Gutknecht, who decided to step up his efforts in 2007 hoping to win the Mid-American championship, sits only 17 points behind Spoonmore. Swan has fallen back to fourth in the series standings but is sure to make a run at the top three as he sits only 30 points behind Spoonmore.

The event at DRP this Saturday promises to be as enticing to drivers and fans as any on the 2007 schedule. The Mid-American Stock Car Series has already seen one first time winner in Dave Obermeyer on April 14th at the Rockford Speedway. Last week at MIS three drivers recorded career best finishes. Perhaps one of those drivers, 2006 Mid-American rookie of the year Jake Finney, Polo, IL’s Danny Powell or 17-year old Andrew Kulka, will be the first to park their Mid-American mount in victory lane at DRP.

The pit area at Dells Raceway Park opens at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon with qualifying schedule for 5:30 and racing at 7. For more information on DRP please visit www.dellsracewaypark.com.
