“Two Top-10 Finishes Gives RWM Momentum”
RANDLEMAN, North Carolina (March 23, 2012) - - Ryan Wilson, driver of the No. 12 Southern Pharmacy Services / Randolph Bank Toyota Camry opened his 2012 racing season with a pair of strong top-10 finishes in the rescheduled NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) Late Model event at Southern National (N.C.) Motorsports Park (SNMP) Saturday afternoon.
It was evident that pre-season testing paid off for the family-owned RWM team led by veteran crew chief Kirk Bryant. After practice, Wilson thundered his Toyota Camry to the outside pole for his first-ever start at Southern National in an extremely competitive field of 22 race cars.
In the first event, Wilson played it safe behind the wheel of No. 12 Southern Pharmacy Services / Randolph Bank Toyota Camry tucking into third behind the two leaders until the first caution flag waived. On the restart, the second-place competitor elected to use the “cone” rule which allows the competitors to restart the event on the outside line. Wilson was able to move back into the runner up spot for a few laps before slipping back to third once again.
Hovering inside the top-five, a late race caution would jumble up the field and surprisingly send a lot of competitors who were running behind Wilson to the outside line with Wilson electing to keep his automobile on the bottom; hoping that he would be at an advantage. Despite his efforts, the outside line took off trapping the 20-year out of the top-five and frustratingly taking the checkered flag ninth.
With a brief break, Wilson and the RWM team were able to debrief and make a few small adjustments before climbing back in for the second twin segment.
Lining up for round two by how you took the checkered flag in the first race, Wilson would sail off from ninth and quickly move his No. 12 Southern Pharmacy Services / Randolph Bank Toyota Camry back into the top-five. On a mid-race restart, Wilson was able to muscle his way back into podium territory but a late race yellow would again stack up the field with Wilson running in the third position.
When racing resumed, another competitor on the outside line was able to barely slide past Wilson, pushing him back to fourth where he would take the checkered flag.
“First, we had a really good No. 12 Southern Pharmacy Services / Randolph Bank Toyota Camry this weekend and I’m extremely proud of the effort from the Ryan Wilson Motorsports team,” Wilson explained. “This was our first time at Southern National, so while we ran well, we also learned a ton that will allow us to improve when we come back. The “cone” rule is a catch-22. Sometimes it works in your favor and sometimes it doesn’t, that’s just part of the gamble in racing. We can take a ninth and a fourth and press on and look for a win next weekend at Caraway.”
Wilson added, “I want to thank our partners, Southern Pharmacy Services, Randolph Bank and all of our other associate sponsors that make our racing possible. Plus, I can’t forget my family and fans for their support this weekend. We wanted to open our season solid and I think we did that, we just need to keep after it and hope that we’re able to bring everyone home that checkered flag soon.”
The aggressive 2012 Late Model season continues for RWM next weekend when the team will partake in their “hometown” track’s season-opener at Caraway (N.C.) Speedway which is set to roar on Sunday, March 25th with a 250-lap race dubbed the Spring Classic 500 set to launch shortly after 2:00 p.m.
