MOORESVILLE, North Carolina (June 23, 2011) - - 21-year old Zach Knowles had every intention of bouncing back in round three of the 2011 edition of the Summer Shootout at Concord (N.C.) Speedway. After a solid practice effort last week, Knowles had steadily worked his way through the field during the feature battle only to be collected in another competitor’s mishap.
With heavy damage to his No. 51 Bosch automobile, Knowles relied on his Concord, North Carolina-based team to get his hot rod ready for competition this week. After working out some bugs this past Monday in Legends practice, Knowles returned to the track on Tuesday extremely optimistic about the night’s activities.
Knowles, a native of Houston, Texas turned heads in the garage area with an impressive third place qualifying run, locking the Mooresville, North Carolina resident into the main attraction. Extremely pleased with the lap time of his No. 51 entry, Knowles was looking forward to keeping the momentum alive for the feature contest.
Taking the green flag shortly after 8:15 p.m., Knowles held his ground on the first lap before being caught on the outside line with a slew of competitors trying to pass Knowles for position. Not going down without a fight, Knowles brilliantly gave a gallant effort but to no avail. Slipping just outside the top-10 on lap six, Knowles found a hole and began concentrating on his prey ahead of him.
Unfortunately, Knowles’ night would take a dramatic turn as on lap eight when a multi-car incident ensued with the No. 51 Bosch automobile once again becoming a victim of circumstances; being piled into the incident. Knowles’ machine would have to be towed back to the garage area where it was determined that a broken spindle would ultimately force him to retire from competition.
Description: Zach KnowlesA dejected Knowles climbed from his automobile with obvious frustration after being scored in the 25th position.
“I don’t know what to say, it’s disheartening for sure,” said Knowles. “I mean, we had a real good night. To qualify third was the boost that I needed. Once the race took the green flag, there was no room for error. The car was good; I just got trapped on the high side. I was going to be okay once I got to the bottom, but then they started stacking up in front of me and then I was nailed from behind and into the crash I went. It just stinks. It’s the second week in a row, and we’re running on limited sponsorship dollars, so having to repair the No. 51 Bosch car again is something we were hoping we wouldn’t have to do.”
He added, “I want to thank the team and especially Bosch for their support. It means a lot for them to believe in me and be on-board here. We’ll regroup and see what happens next.”
Practice begins at 5:00 p.m. and concludes at 9:00 p.m. Monday, June 27. The fourth race in the 2011 edition of the Summer Shootout kicks off on Tuesday, June 28th and will conclude on Tuesday, July 26th.
