Michael Dabney Jr. Conservative But Quick In Summer Shootout

CONCORD, North Carolina (July 21, 2011) - - After completely repairing the No. 5 Michael Dabney Motorsports (MDM) Legend Car following an incident in last week’s competition at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in the 2011 edition of the Summer Shootout, Crandall, Texas native Michael Dabney Jr. returned to action Tuesday night.
With just three races remaining heading into Tuesday night’s anticipated thriller, the 22-year old knew that it was crucial to keep his No. 5 automobile out of trouble but also stay competitive while trying to bolt himself to the front and leave a gratifying statement.
This past Monday, INEX Legend Car Series officials elected to hold a practice session allowing their competitors to dial in their machines for Tuesday night’s events. The open session was a welcomed one for the rising phenom as the allowed four hours carefully allowed Dabney Jr. to shake down his race car making sure that all the kinks had been worked out.
Feeling confident and ready to go, Dabney Jr. returned to the quarter-mile oval on Tuesday setting a comfortable tone in practice and qualifying preparing himself for the heat race. Starting mid-pack in the heat, Dabney Jr. performed magnificently negotiating his black and yellow machine through the field before taking the checkered flag in fifth; yielding a solid starting spot for the feature.
As the field came to take the green for the feature, several cars began to stack up in-front of Dabney Jr. causing a massive melee. Miraculously, the Mooresville, North Carolina emerged unscathed.
When racing resumed, Dabney Jr. in his typical fashion began methodically moving up through the field. With the laps clicking away, Dabney Jr. found himself battling for a top-10 finishing spot but with the action competitive, the Texan hovered inside the top-15. Trying to make a last lap pass on Kyle Weatherman and Grag Lang, he would come a few inches short of making the pass thus settling for a 15th place finish.
“I was playing conservative tonight,” offered Dabney Jr. “The motor was a little hot, so I was just being careful and I was trying to make sure I didn’t get myself in a position where I couldn’t get out of – that would keep me from competing next week. The car was pretty good, but the field was tough tonight. The outside line didn’t work well; it just seemed to stall you out. That’s how it goes though. I’ll take the finish in stride after the week I’ve had and look forward to having strong runs in the last two races of the Summer Shootout.”
He closed out by saying, “I just want to thank everyone who continues to support Michael Dabney Jr. Motorsports. I would not be here without the help and support of certain people and I am forever grateful and indebted to them for that. Hopefully, they know how much I truly appreciate it. I’ll make it up to them somehow.”
Round nine of 10 for the 2011 edition of the Summer Shootout kicks off on Monday, July 25 with the concluding chapter set for the following night Tuesday, July 26.
