Car markets around the world are fascinating to study. The Indian market is vast and mainly focusses on small, cheap cars that are economical to run. I keep an eye on various websites and forums worldwide and Cartoq is where I go for info on the Indian market.
They published
this article called, "Best used cars for enthusiasts." In it Cartoq says,
"...here are a few choices of good used cars that have good potential to be modified into high performance cars."
They then go on to list the 1.3 litre Maruti (Suzuki) Zen, Fiat Palio 1.6 and Hyundai Getz 1.6 CRDi and a few others. The Palio has 100bhp and is called "...one of the original hot hatches."
In the UK a hot hatch must have 200bhp - minimum. We laud the Focus RS and Clio 200 Turbo for their tyre-scrabbling performance, 0-60 in 5 or so seconds and ability to go round a corner with a rear tyre cocked in the air. The Astra VXR tells you how many G you are pulling through corners.
But perhaps in our pursuit of performance we lose sight of the original ingredients that make an "enthusiast's car". We think we are sophisticated. We spend a ton of money in pursuit of the ultimate car. Maybe the simplicity of a lightweight, 1.3 litre hatchback can bring as much a grin to our faces as the reborn Peugeot 208 GTi.
Take a look at the article. Peel away the prejudice against the tinny hatchbacks which would go for £500 on a dodgy dealers car lot in England and see if you can appreciate the Indian's enthusiasm for a real driver's car.
