Mercedes-Benz recently announced a revised E class, mostly with diesel engines. The E class is a fine car but the engines are rather uninspiring (although powerful and torquey). The model needed a halo - an AMG. The vast majority of E class's sold will be diesels but without that uber-powerful flagship the range seems a little prosaic.
No more. Mercedes have delivered with the new E 63 AMG - indeed they have delivered far more than anyone expected. Ahead of the flurry of stats you're about to read one in particular stands out.
The Mercedes-Benz E 63 AMG S-Model does 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds. That is faster than a Ferrari California, Lamborghini Gallardo or Porsche 991 Carrera.
There will be two variants, the E63 AMG saloon and the E 63 AMG S-Model saloon or estate. Here are the stats in full.
E 63 AMG - 5.5 litre twin turbo V8, 557bhp, 531 lb ft torque, 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds, top speed limited to 155mph, 28.8mpg
E 63 AMG S-Line saloon - 5.5 litre twin turbo V8, 585bhp, 590 lb ft torque, 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds, top speed limited to 155mph, 27.4mpg
E 63 AMG S-Line estate - 5.5 litre twin turbo V8, 585bhp, 590 lb ft torque, 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds, top speed limited to 155mph, 26.9mpg
Transmission is via an AMG Speedshift 7 speed semi-automatic gearbox. This has 4 functions - Controlled Efficiency, Sport, Sport plus and Manual. Stop Start is deactivated in anything other thanControlled Efficiency. The gearbox also has a Race Start function - handy for an estate car.
Other standard features include a differential lock on the rear axle and vented, carbon brakes. The S-Model, as well as bringing more power, features a revised grille and splitter, various bits of chrome trim and quad tail pipes.
The UK market will only get rear wheel drive E 63 AMGs whilst the US and other LHD countries will be able to saviour Mercedes' four wheel drive 4-Matic.
The E 63 AMG launch will take place in April with the S-Line following in June. Prices are yet to be announced but should be around the £80,000 mark.
