BMW have announced the following additions to it's smaller car range and have also confused buyers with yet more mismatching numbers and engine configurations.

The 1 series gets a new diesel engine with the introduction of the 114d. Continuing BMWs move away from the number on the back of the car representing car and engine size the 114d features the 1.6 litre 4 cylinder turbo-diesel with 95bhp and 235Nm. 0-60 takes 12.2 seconds. Whilst the power and performance figures aren't exciting at least the fuel consumption is worthy of note at 65.7mpg, and CO2 emissions are 112g/km. The 114d is available to order but BMW haven't released any prices yet.

The 3 series saloon gets a wider engine range. The 320i EfficientDynamics gets a 1.6 litre (yes, we did say 320i) turbocharged petrol engine which produces 170bhp and delivers 53.3mpg. 0-60 is 7.6 seconds. The 316i, unbeloved in previous years by company car owners who really wanted a 320i, makes a return with a 1.6 litre (back to using the correct numbers) petrol engine which has 136bhp and does 0-60 in 8.9 seconds. It will return 47.9mpg. The 320i costs £25,730 and the 316i is £22,850.

The 3 series Touring also gets new engines. The 320i Touring has a 2 litre petrol engine with 184bhp and does 0-60 in 7.5 seconds and returns 45.6mpg. The 318d Touring has a 2 litre diesel engine (back to numerical wrongness) with 143bhp, 0-60 in 9.2 seconds and 60.1mpg. the 316d Touring also uses the 2 litre diesel engine (we give up) but has 116bhp, 0-60 in 11.2 seconds and 60.1mpg. BMW haven't announced a price for the 320i Touring yet but the 316d is £26,180 and the 318d is £28,280.
