DUQUOIN, Illinois - - 16-year-old Jake Griffin is eagerly preparing for the next stage of his racing career as the teenager hopes to make his United States Auto Club (USAC) Midget debut in the highly anticipated Junior Knepper 55 at the Southern Illinois Center this Saturday, Dec. 19.
Griffin, a part-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) driver and avid dirt racer will partner with Jody Rosenboom Racing in the No. 6R machine with support from Vatterott College.
“I’m really excited about this newest step in my racing career and the opportunity to make my USAC Midget debut,” said Griffin. “We’ve been working hard to make this happen for some time and the dots have connected and I’m eager to accept the challenge and succeed with a feature win on Saturday night.”
Griffin will utilize Saturday’s activities which is expected to include NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr., to prepare for the January’s Chili Bowl, considered to be the pinnacle of USAC Racing.
“Anytime you can keep in the seat is important,” added Griffin. “I’m focused on Chili Bowl next month, but the chance to compete and race against the likes of Ricky Stenhouse Jr., not to mention battle some of the drivers in USAC is too good of an opportunity to refuse.”
Saturday night’s Junior Knepper 55 is the first USAC Midget indoor race in eight years. NASCAR icon Tony Stewart won the last.
“Indoor racing is cool,” Griffin explained. “Not only is it something different, but creates and builds an atmosphere that is energetic and electrifying.”
While the teenager is in somewhat familiar territory, his aspirations of competing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on a more permanent basis is making great strides.
“We’re focused on getting a lot more truck races under our belt next year,” sounded Griffin. “We’re working around the clock on sponsorship and have some great things in the works, but it takes time. I made some great personal accomplishments in 2015 and I’m looking forward to continuing to write the next chapter of my NASCAR career in 2016 and beyond.”
