The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today provided information about recalls of two Cosco child safety seats and encouraged owners to obtain the recall remedies.
The agency has no reports of injury associated with these problems and said that owners should continue to use the seats while waiting for the remedy kits.
The first recall involves 206,353 Cosco Touriva Convertible T-Shield (full wrap fabric cover) Model 02-084, Touriva Convertible T-Shield (partial wrap fabric cover) Model 02-094, Touriva Convertible T-Shield (full wrap fabric cover with pillow) Model 02-096, Touriva Convertible T-Shield (partial wrap vinyl cover) Model 02-404, and Touriva Convertible T-Shield (partial wrap fabric cover) Model 02-821, manufactured from May 1, 1996 through Nov. 26, 1997. When NHTSA tested these seats for compliance with the applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Standard, the buckles on some seats would not release properly. A free repair kit, including replacement buckle and instructions, will be provided to all owners of these child seats.
The second recall involves 815 Cosco 02-729-TED Arriva infant child restraints manufactured from March 31 through April 7, 1999. Some of these units were produced without an air bag warning label. This does not comply with the requirements of FMVSS No. 213. New seat pads with air bag warning labels and installation instructions will be provided to owners of these restraints.
Cosco has developed a procedure under which owners can determine whether their seat is covered by a recall. If the 6-digit manufacture date code on the left side of the seat is between the dates listed above, the owner should call Cosco at (800) 221-6736 to obtain the free remedy. For more information, owners can call this number or write to Cosco, Inc., P.O. Box 2609, Columbus, Ind., 47202-2609.
Consumers with questions about this or any other safety recall campaign may call NHTSA's toll-free Auto Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236. The information is also available on the NHTSA website, www.nhtsa.dot.gov .
