Japanese Automaker Toyota Still No. 1 in World

Japanese-based Toyota Motor Corporation said it sold 10.15 million vehicles worldwide in 2015, making it the world's top-selling automaker for the fourth consecutive year.

Toyota, the maker of such popular models as the Prius hybrid and Camry sedan, outpaced Germany's Volkswagen AG, which finished with 9.93 million vehicle sales, and U.S.-based General Motors, which came in third with 9.8 million.

Volkswagen had overtaken Toyota in total sales in the first half of 2015 before it became engulfed in a scandal over revelations that it had installed devices in its vehicles designed at dodging pollution tests.

Toyota ended GM's decades-long hold as the world's No. 1 automaker in 2008, but lost that position in 2011 after the deadly earthquake and subsequent tsunami disrupted its production and supply chains.
