JOLIET, Ill.—Native son of Chicago TJ Zizzo returned to the NHRA Mello Yello Series this weekend for the K&N Filters Route 66 Nationals for his first race of the 2016 season. The driver of the Rust-Oleum Top Fuel dragster qualified a respectable tenth heading into Sunday's finals and was looking forward to turning on some win lights. Unfortunately, his E1 opponent JR Todd had the same idea and the Kalitta Motorsports racer was able to get the victory over Zizzo, sending the second-generation racer home early.
Todd would go on to race two-time and defending Top Fuel champion Antron Brown in the event finals where he fell to the Don Schumacher Racing driver.
Zizzo Racing has nothing to hang their heads about, though. The Rust-Oleum Rocket got better with every pass and the team laid down a solid pass of 3.865 seconds at 317.12 mph Sunday morning after qualifying with an ET of 3.805 seconds.
The next race for the Rust-Oleum Top Fuel team is the Toyota NHRA Sonoma Nationals at Sonoma Raceway July 29-31. For more information on this event, visit them on the Web at RaceSonoma.com.
Rust-Oleum Team Weekend Summary:
Q1: No pass (mechanical issue)
Q2: 3.942 seconds at 248.98 mph
Q3: 3.891 seconds at 276.35 mph
Q4: 3.805 seconds at 321.88 mph
E1: 3.865 seconds at 317.21 mph, Lost to JR Todd
