Japan's Nissan Motor announced on Friday the launch of the zero-emission Leaf, the world's first mass-marketed electric car.
The Leaf, which stands for Leading Environmentally-friendly Affordable Family car, will be available in Japan on December 20 and in the United States by the end of the month. The car will be launched in select European markets in early 2011.
The mid-sized, five-seat hatchback is already sold out in Japan and the United States on pre-orders.
Nissan says the Leaf can reach a maximum speed of 145 kilometers per hour and its top driving range is 200 kilometers on a single eight-hour charge.
